NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY
ENTRANCE EXAM PREPARATION COURSE
Organisation:
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is entry point number one, for
Service in Armed Forces. NDA passouts, by virtue of being indoctrinated
at a younger age and accorded a longer training period, shape up
into the best lot of defence personnel.
Successful candidates, numbering 400, join the three-year, six-term
NDA training program, on completion of which they get a B.Sc. or
BA degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Spread over 8,300 acre estate at Khadakvasla, near Pune, NDA has
developed superb infrastructure for training of cadets, and the
facilities include, besides high-tech class room and labs, two Olympic-size
swimming pools, a gymnasium, 32 football grounds, polo grounds,
a cricket stadium and squash and tennis courts.
The cadets are trained in horse riding and animal management too.
But life is not just about swimming and horse riding. Cadet have
to follow a cramped study schedule, alternating between drills,
sports, hobbies and adventures. Depending upon the stream they choose
for graduation, they have to study specific subjects and a foreign
language too. In the last semester they are also exposed to specialized
service training and skills.
It is a tough and grueling training schedule during which a cadet
is broken down and restructured to meet the defence establishment's
requirements. The cadet emerges from this process as a changed personality.
The training is same for the entire armed force i.e. Army, Navy
and Airforce.
Upon completion of training, army cadets go to the Indian Military
Academy for one year of training. Thereafter, they are commissioned
in the Indian Army with a starting salary of Rs. 8250/- (along with
perks) Air force cadets proceed to Hyderabad for specialized training.
At this stage too, a screening is done. Based on that, they are
assigned to fighter, transport or helicopter pilot slots or ground
staff duties. On completion of training, they are absorbed as flying
officer with a starting pay or RS 8250/-. Naval cadets undergo one
year of specialized training at the Naval Academy, Goa.
Eligibility and applications:
Young boys in the age group of 16 1/2 to 19 years are eligible
to apply. NDA demands class XII qualifications but you have to bear
two things in mind. One, you can apply even as you are clearing
class XI because the entry process takes over a year and by the
time you are through, you would have cleared class XII. January
and July are the two annual inducting months. So., If you, as a
class XI student apply for admission in response to the advertisements
that appeared in April/May 2002, you would be aiming for the course
that commence in July 2003. For the January 2004 entry, the advertisement
will appear in October/ November 2002. Second, it is only in the
Army that arts and commerce students can apply. The Air Force and
Navy require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the 10+2 level.
The NDA Test
The test is in two stages. The written test asks objective type
questions on maths and general ability. The maths paper carries
300 marks and lasts two-and-a-half hours. General ability is for
600 marks but the test lasts the same duration. The course covers
the class X and XI syllabi-algebra, trigonometry, statistics, arithmetic,
manustaion, geometry, biology, civics, geography, history, physics,
chemistry, English and current affairs. The written examination
is the same for all three arms of the forces.
If you clear the written test, you are called for five-day SSB
selection process. On the day of reporting itself, a screening test
eliminates candidates found lacking in aptitude. Day two and three
are earmarked for the psychological test and last two days are for
group testing. Any time during these five days, an interview is
held. The result is announced on the last day. Over these five days,
the qualities like Courage, Reasoning and Organizing are evaluated
in a candidate.
