What is the role of an airhostess or Flight Purser?
Aviation is a profession based on Responsibility and Trust. Airline passenger invests their trust in a crew of professionals who attend to their Safety and Services requirements during the course of flight. The profession of an airhostess is often confused as unidimensional career focused on glamour. While earlier understandings the role of the flight attendant were limited to only service aspect, air safety has in recent times grown to be predominant duty of the cabin attendant. Rule 38 B of Indian Aircraft Rules 1937 states that 'cabin attendant shall be carried for the purpose of performing duties in the interest of safety of passengers.' It can be implied fro this regulation that although the general perception of the role of the cabin crew in an airline operations is that of service and glamour, the actual function of these professionals lies in the convoying of the safety interest of airline passengers. The primary function of the cabin attendant, as legally defined, is to safeguard the passenger by providing leadership in times of emergency and by effectively managing any potential hazards.

There are thus, two aspects to the job of flight attendant, that of Service and Safety. From the service angle, the cabin attendant must be compliant whereas on the safety front a commanding and authoritative behavior is of essence. It is this conflicting nature of the behavior pattern adopted while discharging cabin duties that presents a challenge to the cabin crew member.
